Google Feature: Gmail Mic Drop "More tears than laughter"

Google Feature: Gmail Mic Drop "More tears than laughter"

Gmail Mic drop prank caused more tears than laughter. This prank made users send GIF on serious and business mails which further resulted into dire consequences. On April 1, the company announced its latest feature “Gmail Mic Drop” a version of the send button which also had a GIF of a minion dressed as a queen dropping a microphone to the end of your mail.
The mail easily got delivered but that was the time you heard about the respective mail. Even If you try to respond to it again, it won’t be there. The company chose to implement the Mic drop feature on every user’s compose window, making it easy to hit the button accidentally. Because of this feature many people faced numerous problems at their work stations. April fools pranks are, no doubt a great fun but when it starts affecting your career perspectives then it’s really hard to digest it.
Therefore, Google got many complaints from users from all over the world. But on the other hand, Google’s customer service was always available on phone and always replied to users queries and questions via e-mails.  As a result Google had to turn off the feature. It was only because of a Bug, that this Mic drop feature turned out to be a full headache for the users.

Now lets come to the saying of Google about the failure of this feature and about the learning from the failure of "Gmail Mic Drop".

At Google we have a culture of sharing what we learned when things go wrong, and we want to share these learnings with you:
  1. We should have asked you before turning on the feature, and it should have included a confirmation before sending.
  2. We didn't anticipate accidental clicks: "Send + Mic Drop" was too close to other send buttons ("Send" as well as "Send & Archive"), which caused confusion.
  3. And yes there was a bug. It was rare, but possible to press the regular "Send" button and still Mic Drop if you did the following:

  • Opened a new compose window
  • Pressed the “Send & Mic Drop” button with no recipients and saw error message
  • Edited the message by adding message recipient(s)
  • Pressed the regular send button.
